Commissioned by William Marbury who was a prominent Georgetown financier, staunch Federalist, and the namesake of the landmark Supreme Court caseMarbury v. Madison, the residence embodies the style and grace of Federal architecture while carrying an exceptional historical lineage. The facade is classic and timeless with rose-red brick laid in balanced courses and symmetrically aligned sash windows with deep green shutters. There is a centered entry crowned by a delicate fanlight and a refined cornice that completes the composition. Eschewing ostentation, the design favors proportion, light, and restraint which are all hallmarks of the Federal style that make the home as elegant today as it was two centuries ago. During the 1960 campaign and transition, the townhouse became an informal nerve center. Advisors came and went through the gracious doorway; decisions about Cabinet appointees were considered in the front rooms; and, on winter mornings, the President-elect stepped onto the porch to share announcements with the press gathered along the brick sidewalks. On January 20, 1961, John and Jacqueline Kennedy departed this door for inaugural ceremonies. An indelible moment that fixed the house in the nation's visual memory. Soon after, the property returned to private stewardship and it's essential character preserved.
